PRIDE PICTURES PRISM
The City of Media Arts Queer Short Film Award

Jury decision

Winning film:
Yo maté a Lucca (I Killed Lucca)
Director: Ana Moreno Hernández, 17 min., Mexico, 2023

The independent jury, consisting of Silvia Neves (Freiburger Lesbenfilmtage), Andreas Bührmann (Pink Apple Film Festival) und Daniela Burkhardt (UNESCO City of Media Arts Karlsruhe) selected “YO MATÉ A LUCCA” by Ana Moreno Hernández as the winning film from 19 short films competing for the PRIDE PICTURES PRISM – The City of Media Arts Queer Short Film Award in the PRIDE PICTURES Queer Film Festivals Karlsruhe programme in October 19–27, 2024.

The film was particularly convincing with its unconventional storytelling and exciting illustrated concept. The film plays vividly with the handling of panic attacks and allows viewers to immerse themselves in the emotional world of the affected protagonist in a surprising way. With this award, the jury would like to honour the overall concept of this short film, but also the strong performance of the actors. The film’s central theme – life with panic attacks – is made visible through particularly strong performances and audiovisual elements.

Honorable Mention:
Seahorse Parents
Director: Miriam Guttmann, 9 min., Netherlands, 2024

The jury would also like to give a special mention to the film “SEAHORSE PARENTS”. In this touching short documentary, Miriam Guttmann draws our attention to the views of trans men on pregnancy. The originality and social relevance of the film shows new perspectives and makes an important contribution to the visibility of alternative family models.

We are back! We are proud to announce the 31st PRIDE PICTURES. After our brilliant anniversary festival, we will be showing you even more films this year and inviting more guests than ever before. The inspiring collaboration with the Kinemathek and the Schauburg is being expanded.

Look forward to guests, film talks, premieres and repeats in two cinemas. With 16 feature and documentary films and three short film programs, we are once again showing sparkling diamonds of queer film culture.

Patroness 2024

Are you looking for role models? Do you want to broaden your horizons? You might find inspiration in courageous and unusual stories. The world of film creates a wide spectrum of experiences.

The PRIDE PICTURES festival, which has been around for more than 30 years, provides a huge forum for films that are not mainstream and contributes significantly to increasing the visibility and acceptance of queer people and their stories.

It is still about creating a greater sense of normality for a wide range of sexual orientations and identities.

In my industry, film, TV and theater, we have only just begun to address the visibility of queer life and diversity. I know what I'm talking about. Coming out in my professional world was and still is met with prejudice and fear. But things are changing.

A festival like PRIDE PICTURES can promote the rights and equality of queer people and create political pressure for change.

Let's celebrate this festival in the fight for equality and a more inclusive society. Storm the cinemas, discuss and be curious.

A big compliment to the festival team and all the helpers around it.

Showing Diversity

For over 30 years, the PRIDE PICTURES Queer Film Festival Karlsruhe has been showing queer stories on the big screen and highlighting diverse perspectives on queer love and queer life.

The festival evolved from the Lesbian and Gay Film Days, which were founded in 1994. Since 2015, the film festival has been supported by the non-profit association PRIDE PICTURES e.V. and has become one of the major queer film festivals in Germany. The festival program includes current international feature films, documentary films selected by the festival jury and now legendary short film programs curated by the team. The festival program includes film talks with filmmakers, the festival party and a panel discussion with high-profile participants.

The films come to us in a variety of ways, some of them are submitted by filmmakers or distributors, and some of them are discovered by festival members at other festivals such as the Berlinale.

The festival provides a forum for a socially engaged, sophisticated film culture that is worthy of discussion. The festival venues are the Kinemathek and Schauburg cinemas in Karlsruhe, whose staff support us logistically, technically and ideally. The association also organizes special screenings in collaboration with other associations and cultural workers.
