PRIDE PICTURES PRISM 2025
The City of Media Arts Queer Short Film Award

Decision of the jury

WINNER:
My Endless Eclipse
Regie: Bijan Aarabi, 15 Min., Kanada & Islamische Republik Iran, 2025

The film impressively portrays the inner world of a queer person through a unique cinematic approach. Minimalist yet richly detailed motifs create the world of this exceptional narrative. The lighting mood clearly reveals the contrast between the dark world of the character and the bright patriarchal society. This irreconcilable opposition is made tangible through the constant interplay of light and shadow, reflecting the deep isolation of the protagonist. The quote “an eternal obstacle, to be a woman, not to be a woman” expresses the hopeless situation clearly and unmistakably. The character is trapped in a cocoon of societal notions of womanhood and non-womanhood, while the multi-voiced voice-over merges various gender roles into a harmonious chorus that becomes the powerful voice of our protagonist — inside, everything is allowed. Taken together, these elements make My Endless Eclipse a strikingly profound film that speaks of the yearning for freedom in queer identities, while also revealing the price such freedom can sometimes demand. Through poetic imagery, a precise interplay of light and shadow, and a masterful narrative structure, the film sets new standards for international queer cinema. In an inspiring way, it opens a space where identity, society, and artistic expression merge in touching harmony.

Honorable Mention:
Hi Mom, it’s me, Lou Lou
Regie: Atakan Yilmaz, 21 Min., Türkei, 2024

The jury recognizes „Hi Mom, it’s me, Lou Lou” as a deeply moving and courageous portrayal of the loneliness experienced by queer identities within traditional family structures. The film stands out with its brave protagonist who, after the sudden death of his mother, openly and honestly confronts his father with his fears and feelings of guilt. This confrontation opens a powerful window into the painful yet liberating search for self-love, identity, and acceptance within the family. With great sensitivity and emotional depth, the film explores the complex dynamics of familial expectations and the strength required to remain true to oneself—convincingly embodied by lead actor Onur Gözeten. An outstanding example of queer cinema that leaves a lasting impression.
